Agapé Alternatives for Christian Couples (2026)

The Cleave Team · 21 July 2026 · 3 min read

Honesty first: Cleave — one of the alternatives below — is our app. We have tried to be scrupulously fair to Agapé, which many couples genuinely love.

Agapé is a lovely app — so why look elsewhere?

Agapé helped popularise the best mechanic in this category: each of you answers a daily question privately, and the answers unlock together. Couples who use it tend to speak warmly of it, and its ratings are deservedly strong.

That said, three themes come up when couples go looking for an alternative:

  • The questions can start to feel thin. Public reviews from longer-term users mention questions repeating or feeling reworded after a while.

  • It is no longer couples-only. Agapé now positions itself for friends and family too, which some couples feel dilutes the "just us" intimacy that made it special.

  • It is not actually a faith app. Despite the name (agapé is the Greek word for divine love), there is no Scripture, prayer or devotional content. For Christian couples who want their daily ritual rooted in the Word, that is the biggest gap of all.

The alternatives

1. Cleave — for couples who want Christ at the centre

Cleave keeps the private-answer-and-reveal loop Agapé users love, and roots it in Scripture: every day pairs one honest question with a short devotional (Scripture → reflection → prayer → one small action). Beyond the daily rhythm there are free repair tools for the hard days — including a "Send a Pause" you can send mid-argument — plus couple games, challenges, a collaborative photo puzzle, and printable keepsakes made from your own answers.

The whole daily rhythm is free. Covenant Plus is £4.99/month or £34.99/year and one plan covers both spouses — at the time of writing that is less than half of a comparable couples subscription elsewhere. There is also a Founding Member lifetime option (£59.99) until 30 September 2026. iPhone, Android, and any browser.

2. Paired — the polished secular heavyweight

Expert-written questions and quizzes, audio courses from respected academics, and beautiful design. No faith dimension, and the subscription is priced at the premium end — but if you want secular, evidence-led depth, this is the strongest option.

3. Gottman Card Decks — free conversation fuel

1,000+ research-backed conversation starters, entirely free. No pairing loop or progress tracking, but a wonderful supplement to date nights, whatever else you use.

4. Love Nudge — learn how your spouse receives love

The official 5 Love Languages® companion. Free and gentle; better as a seasonal tune-up than a daily ritual.

5. Lasting — a structured course, therapy-adjacent

Assessment-driven sessions built on marriage research, now part of Talkspace. More curriculum than conversation; a sensible choice if you are weighing up couples counselling.

Choosing well

If what drew you to Agapé was the daily reveal with the person you love, you will feel at home in Cleave within a day — the loop is the same, but each day stands on Scripture, and the price deliberately stays low so it never becomes a reason to stop. If you want secular expertise, choose Paired. If budget is the constraint, Gottman's free decks are a gift.
